In 1998, a comprehensive Strategic Highway Safety Plan for the U.S. was developed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. This plan identifies 23 important issues that need to be addressed. Subsequently, comprehensive Guides to address each of these issues have developed.
Two of these guides were written by CSYD researchers. One deals with young driver crashes, detailing what state officials can do to reduce the high crash rates of novices. The other summarizes the known effective policies and programs for reducing alcohol-related crashes.
Both these guides reflect comprehensive reviews of the research literature as well as the input from numerous national experts on these topics.
