Role of parental involvement

Crash rates decrease sharply over the first several months of driving, then continue declining for several years, at a slower rate. Even though it is not yet understood precisely what is learned from this experience that results in lower crash rates, it is clear that the more practical driving experience new drivers get — up to a point — the sooner they are likely to move through the highest risk period.

When teens begin driving without an adult in the car, their crash rate increases sharply. Acquiring a substantial amount of practical, on-the-road experience with parental supervision can reduce the likelihood that young drivers will have a crash. Parents can also play an important role after their teen has moved on to unsupervised driving.
